Gisborne
The Marina restaurant proved to be an excellent venue, with guests able to enjoy a river view as well as good company. Parent contact in Gisborne is Anne Maclaurin. Earlier in the day, a number of parents took the opportunity to find out more about King’s by meeting with Deputy Head Gill Simpson. Interest had been generated by an article in the local paper, the Gisborne Herald
Doug RISHWORTH (Parnell 66-70) was MC and got the evening off to a rousing start. In one of his final duties in his term as KCOCA President, Rob COATS (Marsden 62-65) spoke about the special place that is King’s College.
In his ‘maiden Branch Dinner speech’, new Headmaster Roy Kelley echoed the sentiments expressed in his previous Courier column about what has impressed him so far about the College, and mixed in the humourous side of settling in to a new job and country.
Thames
The Thames Branch dinner was held in the Sealey St Caf, following drinks outside the venue. Guests enjoyed a beautiful buffet-style dinner.
Peter GUNN (Selwyn 70-74) was Master of Ceremonies. Most of those present were curious to meet the College’s new Headmaster, and Roy Kelley didn’t disappoint, giving a lively and informative speech.
KCOCA Executive Officer David English spoke briefly, then orchestrated, in his own inimitable way, the roll call of Old Collegians. There was a true mixture of ages on hand, including some 1951 old boys and prospective parents. Thanks must go to Parent Contact Anthea Troughton for her behind-the-scenes work.
Northland
Around 75 Northlanders mixed with King’s representatives at the Marist rugby clubrooms in Whangarei for what is quickly becoming one of the ‘must-attend’ occasions on the King’s calendar.
Branch co-ordinator Roddy MACDONALD (School 62-66) spoke briefly before leaving the lecturn to namesake (but no relation), incoming KCOCA president Murray MACDONALD (School 54-59). After dinner, Headmaster Roy Kelley’s address was well appreciated for its humour and commonsense approach. The roll call, during which parents spoke freely alongside Old Collegians about fun times at the College, was a real highlight; "absolutely hilarious", was one comment.
Parent co-ordinator Linda Chapman, who has put three sons through the College, said she met a couple of parents a day or two later who both commented on what a great evening it was. In particular, past and present parent of School House were rapt that not only Housemaster Mark Kennelly was there, but also his wife Leigh, illustrating the ‘King’s family’ approach at its best. |
